I spent five weeks in Sumatra, Indonesia, drawing and researching. For most of this time I stayed with my aunt, Deborah Martyr, in Sungai Penuh. She has lived in Sumatra for 25 years working for Fauna & Flora International. Deborah has been at the heart of efforts to conserve the Sumatran Tiger against the twin threats of poaching and deforestation.
I drew the local community and accompanied the Fauna & Flora tiger team into the jungle where I was able to draw the team at work. I also spent a lot of time learning about bird poaching. I drew, interviewed the local people and tried to gain a greater understanding of the country and the treats to wildlife.
